Hacks Season 3 Revisit
With us a week away from the fourth season of HBO/Max's critically acclaimed Hacks I decided today to revisit the shows third season which we all are away rightfully won the series it's first Primetime Emmy Award for Comedy Series. A victory I agree with having also awarded the season my Comedy Series win.
Having loved the shows first two seasons all the episodes of built up relationship wise between Ava and Deborah really came to a head multiple times throughout the series basically perfect nine episode season. The season didn't waste anytime getting us back into the up and down yet always fascinating relationship between the pro Deborah (Jean Smart) and her young comedy writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) with them almost immediately coming back together with some brilliant moments of comedy and dramatic realisations that carried throughout their bond during the rest of the season.
The show also having taken the time to let us know the shows supporting characters also led to some brilliant comedic beats with the always incredibly funny bond between Jimmy (Paul W. Downs co-creator of the series) and Kayla (Megan Stalter) whose building management firm was such a pleasure throughout.
The season didn't relay on standout guest stars as much as previous seasons but I didn't necessarily mind given how focused in on the series regulars the season was which culminated in the seasons finale "Buttleproof" which easily ranks among the series greatest episodes. You know a series has properly put in the time to develop a dynamic duo like Deborah and Ava that when either betrays the other like Deborah did to Ava by not offering her the job she deserves it actually breaks you the audiences heart. Both actresses have so honestly played their parts during the whole series run that i appropriately teared up when Ava felt the betrayal by Deborah to then turn it on it's head in the episodes final moments.
What has always been central to the shows success is how Ava and Deborah interact with one another so knowing how at odds both women will be with one another in this fourth season makes me so happy for both the comedic and dramatic narrative possibilities that this fourth season will give us.
Bravo to all involved in a fantastic season that I so quickly binged through enjoying every single second of the season comedically and character based too.
